Answer to Question 1

The study by Macht, Haupt, and Ellgring in 2005 specifically looked at the effects of an impending exam (3 to 4 days earlier) on eating, using a field design with a control group. Students were given beepers and randomly beeped 10 times during their normal waking hours to remind them to record their stress levels, the amount they had just eaten since they were last beeped, and their reasons for eating. Compared to the participants who did not have an impending exam, the students in the exam anticipation group reported more stress and more of a tendency to use eating to distract them from tension or negative emotions (e.g., fear) they experienced when anticipating their upcoming exams. College student stress also predicts the night-eating syndrome, a type of problematic eating often leading to weight gain in which a person eats very little in the morning but overeats at night.
