Answer to Question 1

Aerobic means with air (i.e., oxygen) and contrasts with anaerobic which indicates without air. Whereas jogging is a form of aerobic exercise because you can continue to oxygenate your body while you jog, sprinting is a form of anaerobic exercise because at some point during your sprint your bodily systems can no longer sustain their oxygen supplies to maintain energy demands. This lack of oxygen will soon stop your sprint to allow you to catch your breath so you can restore your body's oxygen deficit. Cardiorespiratory fitness can be measured directly using a treadmill test and recording peak absolute oxygen consumption.

Answer to Question 2

Avoid overdoing exercise. Challenge negative thinking. If you have thoughts that discourage you, challenge your negative thinking with positive self-talk using the cognitive restructuring techniques. Look for intrinsic rewards. Select a type of exercise that is the most fun for you so that intrinsic rewards are built into the activity. Maintain a regular routine. Find a workout partner. Evidence indicates that we are more likely to maintain an exercise program if we have someone else to work out with. Avoid the abstinence violation effect. Recognize that it is normal to have lapses.
