This idea known as hedonic adaptation is based on the concept that we are walking on a hedonic treadmill. Though our feet are moving, our happiness levels are not. Can you think of a time when you made a new purchase, say a new car, and were happier for a while? According to this concept, possessing the new car was fun and novel at first, but eventually your life driving the new car became your new normal as you experienced hedonic adaptation.
