Answer to Question 1

The various tools and techniques of direct marketing include direct mail, catalogs, telemarketing (telephone in and telephone out), direct-response advertising (broadcast and print), new electronic media (teleshopping and videotext), and direct selling (repetitive person-to-person selling, nonrepetitive person-to-person selling, and party plans).

Answer to Question 2

Advertising does an effective job of reminding consumers to buy. Therefore, when consumers need to purchase a given type of product, they are more likely to consider brands that are in their evoked set (top-of-the-mind awareness) than brands that are not. Advertising does an effective job of maintaining a brand name in the consumers' evoked set.
