Most clients with bipolar disorder require long-term maintenance on lithium or other antimanic medication. 1. Clients should never stop medication without consulting the physician. 3. Once a therapeutic level is achieved, the client will continue on maintenance doses of lithium. 4. Diuret-ics are contraindicated for the client on lithium.

Understanding the disorder may occur later when the client cognition has improved enough to be able to process information. 2.
