Most clients with bipolar disorder require long-term maintenance on lithium or other antimanic medication. 1. Clients should never stop medication without consulting the physician. 3. Once a therapeutic level is achieved, the client will continue on maintenance doses of lithium. 4. Diuret-ics are contraindicated for the client on lithium.

Ability to manage basic ADLs demonstrates improvement in major depression. 1. Understanding the disorder may occur later when the client cognition has improved enough to be able to process information. 2.
