Research showed that there were often limitations and barriers in interactions with these secret partners. And their physical and psychological well-being might be harmed. People were also less committed and cognitively interdependent when involved in these secret romances. Stress can take a heavy toll on the individuals involved. Secret relationships may also lower self-esteem. These costs clearly outweigh the benefits of such romances.
