Answer to Question 1

Answer:
Women are more selective in their mate choice and do not engage with undesirable mates. Men are less selective and more intent on gaining access to females. Females may help one another avoid mates they are not interested in. Male friends might help one another by boosting the image of their friend to a desired female. Although women were more likely to be cooperative in this way, both men and women engage in cooperation rather than only competition. It is less clear how these findings might play out for lesbian and gay couples.

Answer to Question 2

Answer:
People may find these relationships enticing because there is an element of mystery and danger. However, the costs can be great. Research showed that there were often limitations and barriers in interactions with these secret partners. And their physical and psychological well-being might be harmed. People were also less committed and cognitively interdependent when involved in these secret romances. Stress can take a heavy toll on the individuals involved. Secret relationships may also lower self-esteem. These costs clearly outweigh the benefits of such romances.
