In 70 of cases, it occurs from the splitting of the inner cell mass after the blastocyst had been formed but before implantation. Each inner cell mass develops into a complete embryo with its amnion and yolk sac but develops within a single chorion resulting in a diamnionic, monochorionic placenta.
