What term is used to describe a variation in the size of RBCs?
 
  a. Anisocytosis
  b. Microcytosis
  c. Spherocytosis
  d. Poikilocytosis

Question 2

While examining a stained blood film under 10, a significantly disproportionate number of monocytes are seen at the sides and in the featheredge of the blood film. What should be done?
 
  a. Exclude these cells from the 100 differential evaluation.
  b. Nothing; this finding is not significant.
  c. Make and stain a new slide.
  d. Add 2 more to the number of monocytes counted in the white cell differential.

Answer to Question 1

ANS: A
Anisocytosis is a significant variation in the size of red cells; it does not indicate what those variations are (e.g., normocytic and microcytic, normocytic and macrocytic). The red blood cell distribution width (RDW) should be increased to correlate with this finding.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: C
When too many monocytes are found at the sides and/or in the featheredge of the slide, distribution of white cells on the slide is poor. A new slide must be made and stained.
