 Fat emboli
 Bleeding
 Atelectasis
 Pneumonia
 VTE (DVT and PE)
 Dislocation of hip joint
 Infection
 Pressure ulcers
 Unrelieved pain

Answer to Question 2

b, e
Intraoperative blood salvage involves the recovery and reinfusion of the patient's own blood that
was collected during the surgery. The blood is collected into a cell saver, which then filters and drains
the collected blood into a transfusion bag. The collected blood must be reinfused within 6 hours.
About 50 of the red blood cells are actually saved for reinfusion. Although the usual transfusion
risks associated with transfusions from donors do not occur, there is still a risk of circulatory overload
and infectious transfusion reactions because of bacterial contamination.
