In a hiatal hernia the gastroesophageal junction and fundus of the stomach slide upward through the diaphragm, allowing gastric juices to reflux into the lower esophagus. This diagram does not illustrate an esophageal ulcer or a diaphragmatic hernia. It illustrates the esophagus, not the stomach
