Answer to Question 1

Answer: 3

1. Foot care is given, but is not the immediate postoperative need.
2. Blood sugar will be monitored every hour, as the stress from surgery is likely to raise the blood sugar.
3. Regular insulin will be given every 6 hours to counteract the rising blood sugar from the stress of surgery.
4. Liver function studies are monitored as routine.

3. The client is taught to maintain adequate fluid intake to help decrease the risk of infection.
4. The client with diabetes is more susceptible to infection, and should get an annual flu vaccination.
