A client with type 1 diabetes mellitus is recovering from gallbladder surgery. What should the nurse plan for this client?
 
  1. Foot care every 4 hours
  2. Monitor blood sugar every 6 hours
  3. Give regular insulin every 6 hours
  4. Monitor liver function studies

2. Blood sugar will be monitored every hour, as the stress from surgery is likely to raise the blood sugar.
3. Regular insulin will be given every 6 hours to counteract the rising blood sugar from the stress of surgery.
4. Liver function studies are monitored as routine.

1. The client is taught to eat a balanced diet and not to eat a diet high in carbohydrates, as carbohydrates break down into glucose.
2. Hydrogen peroxide is not used, as it can cause drying and skin damage, causing more sores.
3. The client is taught to maintain adequate fluid intake to help decrease the risk of infection.
4. The client with diabetes is more susceptible to infection, and should get an annual flu vaccination.
