Define the term observation status.

Question 2

Dr. Smith saw his patient Samantha Jones at 9:00 a.m. at Sunnyside Nursing Home to admit her to the facility. Later that day, he is called back to the facility because the patient is experiencing an abnormal heartbeat and is complaining of chest pains. He reports to his coder that he would like to bill the following codes for these services: 99304 and 99308. Is this correct? If not, explain why.

Observation status means that the patient has not been admitted to the hospital as an inpatient, but needs to be admitted under observation for assessment.

Answer to Question 2

This is not correct. Only one code from the range 9930499310 should be billed for the services, as the codes state that only one code can be billed per day.
