The fetal heart starts beating at 21 days, or 3 weeks', gestation. By 8 weeks, the fetal heart is fully developed and by 12 weeks, the fetal heartbeat can be heard with Doppler ultrasound. 1 week after fertilization, no organs or systems are forming. Cell division and differentiation are occurring.
