Answer to Question 1

ANS: C
After a TAPVR repair, most children go on to live full and normal lives. Because this child will return to school, communication with the school nurse is appropriate. Hospice, visiting nurses, and occupational therapy are not warranted.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: A
Up to 75 of cases of AVC occur in children with Down syndrome, so this is the most appropriate referral if this is the case for this child. There is no information in the stem of the question to indicate that the child is terminally ill; the Lions eye bank is unrelated to this condition, and the child is probably not a candidate for a heart transplant because these defects can be repaired surgically.

Dogs have been used in studies to detect various cancers in human subjects. They have been trained to sniff breath samples from humans that were collected by having them breathe into special tubes. These people included 55 lung cancer patients, 31 breast cancer patients, and 83 cancer-free patients. The dogs detected 54 of the 55 lung cancer patients as having cancer, detected 28 of the 31 breast cancer patients, and gave only three false-positive results (detecting cancer in people who didn't have it).
