Answer to Question 1

The Protestant religion stresses hard work and frugality and is linked to the development of capitalism and economic emancipation. Judaism, with its disdain of ignorance and sloth, stresses education and has led to industrial development. Islam dictates social etiquette, consumption, and bans the use of interest rates. The Hindu religion encourages a family orientation and discourages the consumption of animal products. Buddhism stresses sufferance and avoidance of worldly desires which may work against marketing in some cases. Religion also affects business days - for example, Christianity tends to limit business activity on Sundays, Islamic countries do not do business on Fridays, and in Israel, businesses are closed on Saturdays, which are reserved for Jewish religion observance. Religion will also affect gender roles and gift giving. This may be found in the Religion section (5-2b).
