Answer to Question 1

Culture industries mass produce cultural products; movie studios and radio stations are like assembly lines, using the same types of images and themes that have been successful in the past, often considered old-fashioned, even oppressive. In order to earn revenue in a free market economy the product must appeal to as many people as possible therefore themes are familiar and unthreatening. However, producers must add some originality to attract an audience and sometimes preconceptions or stereotypes are challenged. Media consumers are not passive zombies. In contrast to the old-fashioned messages mass produced by culture images, new media aimed at Blacks (BET, Black-owned record companies) and Hispanics (Telemundo, Univision, Hispanic magazines), and Arabs (Al Jazerra) have developed and grown.
