Answer to Question 1

Discipline refers to actions taken by a supervisor to enforce the organization's standards and regulations. It generally follows a typical sequence of four steps: verbal warning, written warning, suspension, and dismissal. Basically, if a problem is associated with an employee's lack of desire to do the job, not with ability, it becomes a discipline problem. The supervisor who makes the discipline process less painful for the employee, behaves with compassion, and treats the employee with dignity is likely to find that more severe forms of disciplinary action become unnecessary. In cases in which termination does occur, the employee is better able to handle it.
