A durable power of attorney is a legal, enforceable document that allows health-care and financial decisions to be made by competent persons for incompetent persons. Patients may sign this document when they are competent to have a contingency plan in the event that something happens. Families can also go to court when a person becomes incompetent and request durable power of attorney.

A person's personality, past experiences, and coping skills all are important factors to consider for transitioning. Responses A, C, and D all are objective findings about the person and do not characterize the person's ability to transition.
