Answer to Question 2

In active progressive muscle relaxation, you tense a group of muscles fairly tightlyto about 7080 of a maximum contraction. Once they are contracted sufficiently, you hold them in this state of tension for up to 8 seconds. Then you immediately release those flexed muscles for 15 to 30 seconds. During this relaxation phase, you consciously relax the muscles even more completely so you are as relaxed as possible.

In contrast, passive progressive relaxation is a more passive method of progressing through the various parts of the body, using a technique called the body scan. This method does not involve active contraction of muscles but, rather, a passive scanning of the body. Through detached awareness and observation, individuals discover their bodies in a non-judgmental way and begin to find some relief from their stress-related symptoms.
