The standards (Section A ) for a comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation program require the medical director to be a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician (physiatrist) or a physician who is qualified by virtue of his or her training and experience in rehabilitation and who is board certified in his or her area of specialty and has the appropriate experience and training necessary to provide rehabilitation physician services through one of the following:
Formal residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation

A fellowship in rehabilitation for a minimum of one year

A minimum of two years of experience in providing rehabilitation services for patients
