What other factors might explain diff erences in the amount of water that
  states use, aside from population and area? What will be an ideal response?



Question 2

For the six states you listed in Table  that use the least amount of
  water, which factor do you think is more closely related to water use, the
  population size or the area? Explain. What will be an ideal response?

Other factors that may infl uence state water use include the number and types of
industries, mineral resources, power needs, agricultural activity, climate, and the
amount of water available.



Answer to Question 2

For these states, population size is a better indicator of water use than area. Their area
rank is much more variable than their population rank.
