The kidneys physically remove H+ from the body.

ANS: D
The CO2 excretion of the lungs does not actually remove H+ ions from the body. Instead, the chemical reaction that breaks down H2CO3 to form CO2 binds H+ ions in the harmless water molecule:
H+ + HCO3 H2CO3 H2O + CO2
