Influenza is a serious viral infection spread by droplet transmission. Contact isolation is used for patients known or suspected to have serious illnesses easily transmitted by direct patient contact or by contact with items in the patient's environment. Airborne precautions should be used for patients who are known or suspected to have illnesses transmitted by airborne droplet nuclei, such as measles, varicella, or tuberculosis.
