Alveolar hypoventilation would result from a decreased minute ventilation. Among the many possible causes are oversedation, head trauma, drug overdose of respiratory depressants, and myasthenia gravis.

Moderate ARDS is present when the PaO2/FIO2 ratio falls between 100 and 199 mm Hg.
