The nurse should immediately notify the physician because the findings suggest the client has metabolic acidosis. An infusion of bicarbonate or Ringer's solution should be given only after receiving instructions from the physician. Rebreathing masks are used in the management of respiratory alkalosis and not metabolic acidosis.
