These women are also at a greater risk of developing diabetes 5 to 10 years after pregnancy. The majority of individuals with gestational diabetes have normal glucose tolerance postpartum. Gestational diabetes patients must be reclassified 6 weeks after delivery into one of the following categories: diabetes mellitus, impaired fasting glucose, impaired glucose tolerance, or normoglycemia.
