Answer to Question 1

A large off-center rotating shaft carries multiple blades in slots and they have a reciprocating action as they move in and out, following the cylinder walls.

Answer to Question 2

The oil must be pressurized, atomized, and mixed with air for proper combustion. If any of these are not done properly, sooty combustion will be the result.
