Answer to Question 1

The shaft seal keeps the refrigerant and oil from leaking out of the compressor where the shaft passes through the compressor housing.

Answer to Question 2

Digital refrigerant leak detectors do not draw in an air sample but instead rely on conductivity between two sensor plates.
