Answer to Question 1

. Counselors want to know the level of depression and the presence of dysfunctional thinking to determine if career counseling is to be delayed until the depression is moderated. This is a call counselors are often required to make. What stands out here is what is best for the client.
. Some clients can begin career counseling at the same time a depressive reaction is being addressed. The depressive reaction may not interfere with decision-making.
. Clients with severe levels of depression are carefully screened after intervention strategies have addressed their problems.
. One strategy is to use standardized inventories to determine levels of depression, such as the Beck Depression Inventory. A number of standardized instruments can be used to determine dysfunctional thinking as related to decision-making, such as the Career Thoughts Inventory.
. Counselors use the data from standardized instruments and what they have learned from the intake interview to determine appropriate procedures for each client.
