Tahiti, Moorea, and Bora Bora are often referred to as the French Islands, since they are a territory of France. The Philippines were influenced by Spain, and many people in the north are Catholic; the southern area tends to be Muslim. Other European countries fought over the Philippines, with the United States taking control after the Spanish-American War. The Philippines gained independence in 1946.
