During the nineteenth century until the mid-twentieth century the French controlled Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. Malaysia was protected by Britain until World War II due to shipping interests, and the British still have an influence there today. The Dutch controlled Indonesia until World War II. Tahiti, Moorea, and Bora Bora are often referred to as the French Islands, since they are a territory of France. The Philippines were influenced by Spain, and many people in the north are Catholic; the southern area tends to be Muslim. Other European countries fought over the Philippines, with the United States taking control after the Spanish-American War. The Philippines gained independence in 1946.
