Both are dispersion states. A true solution consists of minute particles that cannot be seen through an electron microscope and are molecules or ions. They exhibit kinetic energy and cannot form a gel. Colloidal dispersions consist of larger particles such as fat or protein that can be seen through an electron microscope and form gels.
