Answer to Question 1

Creatine clearance is a measure of glomerular filtration. It measures the rate by which creatine is cleared from the blood. The test is used to evaluate renal function, to follow the treatment response for those with renal disease, and to adjust medication dosage.

Answer to Question 2

Prednisone: decreases inflammation, mainly by stabilizing leukocyte lysosomal membranes. Also suppresses the immune response. Possible side effects include: peptic ulcer, GI irritation, increased appetite, hypokalemia, hyperglycemia, carbohydrate intolerance, and protein breakdown with muscle weakness.

Sulfasalazine: Inhibits formation of dihydrofolic acid from para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), decreasing bacterial folic acid synthesis. Possible side effects: anemia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, anorexia, and stomatitis.
