Answer to Question 1

Because of the pancreatitis, he is not producing pancreatic lipase. This is the main enzyme responsible for fat digestion. In its absence, fat will not be digested and steatorrhea will develop. The liver has been affected but not permanently damaged and will repair itself, but it needs a good supply of protein to accomplish this. Since all alcohol is metabolized through the liver, any additional alcohol will cause additional damage.

Answer to Question 2

Elevated CRP indicates inflammation, and if other indicators are present to indicate atherosclerosis, like elevated LDL and total cholesterol along with low HDL, the chances are increased that atherosclerosis has formed in some stage. The higher the CRP, the greater the inflammation. Elevated homocysteine could indicate a risk factor for atherosclerosis.
