Answer to Question 2

The role of statins is to inhibit 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase. This is the rate-limiting step of mevalonate synthesis, and mevalonate is the substrate used for synthesis of cholesterol as well as coenzyme Q10 . Coenzyme Q10 plays an important role in oxidative phosphorylation in the myocardial cell, since myocardial diastolic function is highly ATP dependent, and coenzyme Q is needed for this. In the article mentioned below, they reasoned that the early changes of diastolic function may be an early marker of ventricular dysfunction. However, not all of the literature agrees that it is necessary to supplement with coenzyme Q if you are taking statins.
Other studies have shown that coenzyme Q10 has a beneficial effect on patients with heart failure
