Free radicals have the ability to oxidize the lipid fraction of lipoproteins when they enter into the cells lining the arteries. As a result, the lipoproteins, particularly LDL, become trapped in the cells with their load of cholesterol. In time, as this continues, a cascade of events follow that results in atherosclerosis. Antioxidants can help prevent or reduce the incidence of this oxidation and thus prevent or delay the occurrence of atherosclerosis.
