Answer to Question 1

I would recommend the more traditional low-fat, moderate-carbohydrate, moderate-protein diet until the liver clears up. At that point, if all indications of a healthy liver permit, I would slightly increase the fat and reduce the carbohydrate with emphasis on the patient's preferences, likes and dislikes.

Answer to Question 2

CF children are usually very underweight. It is frequently a challenge just to maintain their weight, and getting them to gain weight is usually a difficult goal to attain. Energy needs usually exceed the RDAs by 50 and protein may be 2x as much. If fat is not tolerated, additional p.o. enzymes can be taken to aid in digestion. MCT oil is frequently a good way to increase Kcals. Multivitamins may be 2x the RDAs.
