Dietary fats and minerals can foster or inhibit drug absorption. Likewise, some drugs can change the availability of nutrients. This mechanism is classified as:

  1. Alteration in chelation.
   2. Alteration in bioavailability.
   3. Alteration in metabolism.
   4. Alteration in excretion.

Question 2

Answer to Question 1

2
Rationale: Certain components of food such as fats and minerals can change the bioavailability of drugs, and some drugs can change the availability of nutrients, by fostering or interfering with absorption. Chelation is a type of binding that occurs between a metal ion and another molecule which results in reduced bioavailability. Alterations in metabolism occur after absorption is complete and the substances are in route to the tissues. Alteration in excretion refers to elimination of the byproducts of metabolism.

Answer to Question 2

C
Feedback:
Gastric residuals should be measured every 4 to 6 hours. If the volume of gastric residual exceeds 500 mL, the feeding should be held and client tolerance reassessed.
