Ms. W is a 62-year-old retired client in the clinic today for a wellness visit. After weighing the client, the nurse comments that her BMI is > 35.

The client is aware of a steady weight gain over the past 56 years, but claims it is related to menopause. The best response for the nurse would be: 1. Many women gain significant amounts of weight following menopause..
   2. This may be a good time to discuss diet programs, since you are obviously overweight..
   3. Women have a tendency to gain weight as they get older, but increased exercise and cutting back on fats and sugar could help prevent other medical problems in the future..
   4. Being overweight is a concern, but since you are healthy otherwise we can just watch for awhile to see what happens..

Question 2

Answer to Question 1

3
Rationale: Aging can result in decreased physical exercise leading to a positive energy balance and weight gain. With a BMI > 35, the client is obese and at risk for other medical problems such as diabetes and cardiac disease. There is no proven relationship between menopause and weight gain. Dieting alone has not been shown to be as effective as weight loss and exercise. Waiting to take action increases the risk for development of other medical problems.

Answer to Question 2

C
Feedback:
For most people, the BMR accounts for approximately 60 to 70 of the total calories expended.
