As the highest ranking uniformed officer (unless the prison has the office of a major), the role of the captain is to see that the warden's directives are being enforced in the prison and that staff are complying with these directives. The captain is also responsible for taking whatever measures are necessary to prevent major incidents, such as offender physical altercations, assaults on staff, and contraband in the prison. If they occur, the job of the captain is to ensure that such incidents are handled appropriately and to minimize the negative impact. The prison captain is responsible for developing emergency plans and to routinely conduct drills on these plans.
