Answer to Question 1

Best exemplified by boot camps. Patterned after military training; gives taste of military life; shock into refraining from further delinquent conduct; goals of discipline, self-control, and self-confidence; ease overcrowded incarceration facilities; criticism is that they don't reduce recidivism; net-widening.
