Answer to Question 1

This chemical compound increases the load carrying ability of the lubricant to cushion the shock and rubbing action associated with gear boxes.

Answer to Question 2

A detergent additive holds tiny particles, too small for filtration, in suspension to help keep metal surfaces clean by preventing deposit formation.
