Answer to Question 1

Answer: When John starts to think of negative thoughts, he can think Stop to himself and try to think about something else, or he may try focusing on things that he is grateful for. He can also engage in cognitive-behavioral therapy.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: Putting things on paper through journaling (or speaking to someone who just listens, such as in psychotherapy) allows people to express their negative emotions so they can stop thinking about them so much. Rumination, on the other hand, is when people let stressful thoughts run through their minds, over and over.
