The percentage of HbA1c reflects glycemic control over the preceding 2 to 3 months, the average age of circulating red blood cells. The goal of diabetes treatment is usually an HbA1c value less than 7 percent. Less stringent HbA1c goals (for example, an HbA1c value less than 8 percent) may be suitable for some patients, including those with limited life expectancy, advanced diabetic complications, or a history of severe hypoglycemia. HbA1c testing is typically conducted two to four times yearly
