College Student with Peptic Ulcer Disease: Kelly Burgess is a 23-year-old full-time college student who is 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighs 110 pounds. She is the mother of a 1-year-old son, and she works nights and weekends as a waitress. Kelly recently went to her physician complaining of sporadic burning pain in her stomach when she eats. She reports a loss of appetite as well as a ten-pound weight loss in the last two months. Kelly's doctor diagnoses peptic ulcer disease.What types of medications might Kelly's doctor prescribe and why?

Answer to Question 1

Antibiotics and proton pump inhibitors, H2 blockers, or antacids. Antibiotics fight H. pylori infection; the others are antisecretory drugs that help to relieve pain and allow healing. Bismuth preparations and sucralfate may help coat the GI lining and prevent further damage.
