A change in diet as a patient's food tolerance improves is called diet progression. For example, the diet order may read, progress diet from clear liquids to a regular diet as tolerated.. In practice, this means that the patient would be given clear beverages initially, and then gradually be provided with other beverages or solid foods that are unlikely to cause discomfort.
