Answer to Question 1

Gestational diabetes can result when the hormones of pregnancy interfere with the woman's cells' ability to respond to insulin. This results in high blood glucose in the mother that can increase the weight of her infant. Some infants of diabetic mothers also suffer from physical or mental conditions as well as respiratory difficulties. Women with gestational diabetes are at greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life. If women are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes during pregnancy and their blood glucose levels are actively controlled, they (mother, fetus, and newborn) are less likely to experience complications.
Preeclampsia in mothers results in very high blood pressure. It can cause the mother's organs to fail, which can lead to death for both the mother and the fetus. Detection of maternal high blood pressure can reduce the risk of maternal or fetal/infant mortality.
