Answer to Question 1

a . A person has eaten a high-carbohydrate meal and is now running a marathon.
The body will store as much glucose as it can in the form of glycogen. This stored form of glucose is found in the muscles and liver. As this person starts to run, her liver cells will break down glycogen into glucose, which will be converted into ATP (energy) for the muscles. The body can also break down fat from fat cells located under the skin and within the muscle tissue. The resulting fatty acids can be broken down to release ATP (energy) that will supply the muscles as well.
b. A person has eaten a high-carbohydrate meal and is now playing video games for several days.
The glucose will initially be used immediately for energy or stored in the form of glycogen. (An abundance of blood glucose will allow fats in the meal to be stored in fat cells while the other cells utilize the glucose.) Once the cells' energy needs are met and the glycogen storage capacity of the liver and muscle tissues has been exceeded, any remaining glucose will then be converted to fatty acids and will be stored in the form of fat.
